No Walls For The Small

No Walls For The Small : A book for a new generation

Picture
No Walls For The Small has been a long time coming.  Ryan Ford and Nan Kavanaugh began working on a collection of illustrated children's poetry in Fall of 2004.  The original manuscript evolved over the past 6 years from one book to a series of ten picture books designed to inspire and entertain, while touching on many tough issues that families face this day and age.

The first book of the series, No Walls for the Small was born from a daydream.  After reading a particularly depressing article about kids and hours spent glued to the TV, Nan began to think about her own childhood.  She realized that her most cherished memories were times shared with family and friends enjoying life outdoors.  Her mind began to wander and she thought to herself:

What memories of childhood will children raised in this new digital age of convenience have to reflect back on as adults?

This thought inspired a 5 page poem which she mailed to Ryan, and with his illustrations he made the story come alive.  It morphed into a 24 page picture book.

No Walls For The Small is an epic tale of two children, Tron and Suki, and their quest to reclaim their right to a playful childhood outdoors.

Childhood is the foundation of human development, and free play outdoors is essential to building happy, healthy, creative individuals with a well rounded understanding of what it means to be a small part of a big wonderful world.
